Green-First gets Off the Grid

Back in 1999, just before the great ice storm of Eastern Canada, CEO Jens Naumann got the idea to experiment with a home made wind turbine. Within a few weeks, the project grew to a monstrous size, including many 100 watt Seimen's solar panels and a couple of Southwest Wind turbines; coupled with dozens of deep cycle batteries and other necessary components.

Despite the vendors of the products purchased at that time claiming it is not possible to simply get off the grid using strictly solar, wind and backup generator, Jens proved this theory wrong and before the end of 1999, called in the Ontario Hydro authority and gave instructions to disconnect the 10-family home from the electrical grid.

"You're on your own!" was what the Hydro authority workers said after pulling the meter from the house. Its been this way since; no more hydro bills for 13 years. The building of the power system, having been constructed hastily of untreated low-grade lumber, has seen better days and is now in need of upgrading.

But in the meantime, let the free power roll in!

Features of our test system

  • 1615 watts solar power, and 800 watts wind power
  • 4 KW backup generator used for less than 5% of annual power demands
  • Over 30 KW power storage
  • 3 KW 115VAC modified wave inverter and direct 12VDC water well pumping system
  • Fully expandable to meet future higher power demands
